Academics

One of our core values is rich intellectual capacity. Our academic programmes are therefore designed to achieve the purpose of sound intellectual development. While we set out intentionally to teach and have our students properly comprehend the scope and depth of the curricula designed for each class by the government and statutory examination bodies like WAEC, NECO and Cambridge IGCSE, etc., we also make deliberate effort to impart the education necessary for life outside the fore walls of any academic community.

Religious Activities

RHIS has both practicing Christian and Muslim students. The students fellowship is lively and full of profitable spiritual activities. Scriptural exposition is detailed and insightful. Extremist activities are not allowed in any form, but freedom of worship is permitted within the ambits of the law and the vision of the Founders. Students engage in various spiritual enrichment programmes under the supervision of experienced adults and an ordained clergy. Youth programmes sponsored by nondenominational ministries with trusted antecedents are occasionally permitted to minister to staff and students alike, but participation remains voluntary in such cases.

Extracurricular Activities and Excursions

The goal of extra curriculum aggregately referred to as extracurricular activities is to discover and develop the nonacademic talents and endowments of students in such a way that their lives are transformed through various properly packaged fun-filled and interesting programmes. In addition to various sporting activities, talents are exhibited and developed through clubs and societies like the Literary and Debating Club; Home Makers Club; Press Club; Charity and Leadership Club; Gospel Music Club and Entrepreneurs Club.

Excursions to places of historical importance or special attractions within the country are planned to hold once per term. However, this will depend on the prevailing security situation. Participation in local excursions is usually mandatory as students and accompanying staff will have to write individual reports about the place they visit. Excursions across international boundaries will not be compulsory but parents will be encouraged to sponsor their children as such programmes will offer a lot of benefits to staff and students taking part in them. Adequate notice will be given to parents to enable them prepare for such trips while the school will take care of routine consular requirements. We may also be able to accommodate limited number of parents on the list of our international excursion participants, provided they will be able to abide by our rules of inclusion. Where there are more parents than we plan to permit, participation will be on the basis of criteria which will always be clearly stated ahead of time.

Farming and Culinary Art

The school maintains a small demonstration farm where students are afforded firsthand experiences of farming activities. This is outside the commercial farm run by the Proprietor adjacent the School premises. All manners of crop supported by the soil and peculiar climate of the rain forest are planted, especially vegetables. Nonnative crops like watermelon and cucumber are also planted both for their yield and to demonstrate cultivation processes to students.

Students participate reasonably well in cooking on their duty days from Monday to Saturday and almost entirely on Sundays. They take pleasure in this domestic chore when it is their turn and each student can be said to have mastered the culinary art to a very reasonable degree.

Discipline

RHIS policy encourages the development of self-discipline, high standards of personal behaviour, courtesy and dressing, and respect for others and their properties. This in essence makes the school function without acrimony There are prescribed sanctions for conducts which are below the standard prescribed by the School.

The School has constituted a Disciplinary Committee which sits over major misdemeanors. The Principal may in some cases review the conclusion of the Disciplinary Committee. The School has published its Students’ Code of Conduct and ensures that copies are given to each Student.

Our Students

RHIS students are between the ages of ten (10) and seventeen (1 7). Most of the students were admitted from families new to Ikeji-Arakeji, Ijesa, as well as members of families with long standing connections with the community. Some of the students are from homes situated in Lagos. About a fourth, however, are from other states of Nigeria. We have noticed a number of students from other Countries.

RHIS Routine

Our routines are well out to enhance development in all the “eight aptitude” where learning must be fully activated in growing children and adolescents. This is done with consideration for the growth and the overall wellness of all student.

From Monday through Friday of the week, the students wake up at 5.00 a.m. to observe their corporate morning devotion, after which they tidy up their dormitory and get prepared for classes. Early morning prep commences by 6:30am and runs through to 7:30am when instructional hour begins. The exceptions to this are on Mondays and Fridays when assembly holds between 7 : 30a m a nd 8:00am. Breakfast is taken between 6.55 a.m. and 7.25 am. School assembly holds at 7.30 a.m.

Typically, lessons begin by 7:30am. Breakfast is served by 8.50 am, and lunch comes up immediately after the end of instructional hours at 2.10 pm. The Siesta that holds from 2.40pm to 4.00pm is compulsory and it followed by

the early evening prep that is scheduled for 4.00pm to 5.00pm daily. Sports, gardening, mentor-mentee interaction, fellowship and other extracurricular activities have their individual slots between 5.30pm and 6.45pm. Dinner is served by 7.00pm,and the late evening prep is from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Lights out at 1 0.00pm is preceded by a short corporate fellowship.

The weekend routine is a bit relaxed, such that students have personal time to care and attend to their peculiar needs as well as take the necessary rest that will put them in a fresh frame of mind and body for each new week. Weekend activities include gardening, hostel inspection, TV time, drama, variety night and remedial/preparatory classes.

We are conscious of the role that adherence to well planned routine plays in the overall development of children and adolescents; therefore, all the developmental programmes are generally compulsory. However, within this broad spectrum, students are at liberty and even encouraged to choose the extracurricular activities that best appeal to them, especially those in which they have higher aptitudes.
